WordPress developer in Le Guilvinec: a studio for the port’s small businesses

Le Guilvinec has around 2,700 residents and lives off fishing, in one of the leading ports in France. WordPress maintenance and hosting start at €39 excl. VAT per month, and a WooCommerce online shop at €69 excl. VAT per month. The work is done remotely. I work with businesses in Le Guilvinec, Léchiagat and Treffiagat, with no meeting on site.

In 2019, Le Guilvinec was the leading artisanal fishing port in France by the landed value of French boats. The seat of a maritime district that carries its name, the commune has only around 2,700 residents, spread over 246 hectares, in Finistère.

That tiny territory has one very concrete consequence: a good share of the port’s facilities and businesses is not inside the commune. The site built for them should not stop at an administrative boundary.

What I do for the small businesses of Le Guilvinec

The port

The daily rhythm of the port governs everything else. Businesses there start early, often before offices open, and the day leaves little room for a meeting. A professional site therefore does one precise service: it answers while its owner is at sea, at the fish market or on a quay.

What gets put in place for that:

  • opening hours and days published, updated in minutes from a phone
  • the business, its products and its services presented clearly, readable on a mobile outdoors in full sun
  • the possibility of being reached at any hour through a form, without publishing a personal number on an open page
  • a fast load, tested on an average mobile connection, the one you actually get at the port

How the territory is organised matters just as much. The Steir estuary gave birth to the settlement on both its banks: Le Guilvinec on one side, Léchiagat on the other, and the port brings them together. The maritime college sits in the commune of Treffiagat. A business here therefore works with clients from three communes at once, and a site that named only one town would lose part of its audience. I cover the whole area; Loctudy and Pont-l’Abbé describe the same services in other contexts, and Penmarc’h handles the neighbouring question of seasonal tourism.

What happens when an existing site is taken over

Taking over

Many businesses at the port have a dated site. It was often built correctly, then stopped being looked after. Taking one over starts with a full review, establishing what holds and what has to go, before a line is changed.

For maintenance, that review happens on the live site: installed plugins, measured performance, verified security. A technical upgrade then follows: security vulnerabilities fixed, whatever is no longer used taken out, and settings checked. The data is migrated to a managed hosting plan, and the site runs on a clean base again.

The other possible outcome is stated at the same moment. When the theme is too damaged, or the plugins are no longer maintained by their authors, rebuilding costs less than repairing. Both options are priced, and the decision stays yours.

The maintenance plan, in plain terms

The plan

The plan starts at €39 excl. VAT per month, for one site, with a minimum commitment of six months. It includes eco-friendly hosting with Hosterra, 3 GB of storage and a domain name up to €15 per year, plus daily updates checked before they are applied, backups kept for 50 days, continuous monitoring, a monthly report and fifteen minutes of support.

What is not included is written in black and white. Site editing, whether fixing text, adding products or replacing photographs, is billed at the hourly rate of €60 excl. VAT. New features are quoted separately. And when a plugin is no longer maintained by its author, I do not take it on.

When the site goes down and nobody is in front of the screen, what matters is what is left of it. Updatronix, which I publish on the official WordPress repository, records every update, with versions, trigger and result, and can postpone a release while feedback comes in. The log can be read and exported, so that when you are back from the quay, what happened while you were away is written down rather than pieced together.

An online shop to sell differently

Selling online

A small port business does not need an online shop as a matter of principle. The case where one changes something is narrower: selling part of the catch direct, offering boxes or gift vouchers, taking payment for a trip out or a service. In those situations it is no longer about selling online, but about selling more.

The shop offer starts at €69 excl. VAT per month, with a 24-month commitment, no setup fee and no commission on sales. Card payment is set up through Stripe on your own account, the full buying journey is built, and legal compliance is included: legal notice, privacy policy, terms of sale, delivery and returns. These are generic templates, to be read through and adapted to your business.

One clarification on delivery. Selling fresh produce at a distance assumes a cold chain, deadlines held and its own regulations: I build the shop and its general compliance, I do not take on the logistics, and I say so before the quote rather than after.

Working with a studio remotely

Working remotely

The studio is in Loctudy, a few kilometres from Le Guilvinec. It receives nobody and travels nowhere: exchanges happen by phone, by email or by video call.

At a port, that arrangement has a simple reason. Tide times do not line up with a meeting in the middle of the day, and remote work makes it possible to talk early, late, or from the quay. What does not change is the person at the other end: I am the one who answers the phone, and I am the one who updates the site.

The trade-off is stated too. Nobody will come on site to settle a problem. Everything goes through remote access, backups and monitoring, which are exactly what the plan puts in place.

A measured quality approach, not an installed theme

Quality

Delivering without checking leaves the work half done. The studio’s services rest on two measurable references: the certification Opquast niveau expert, with a score of 958 out of 1000 obtained in 2024, covering site quality and accessibility, and the ISTQB software tester certification obtained in 2022.

So the site is tested before it goes live: forms, mobile display, loading speed, link consistency, readability. I work with WordPress, WooCommerce, GeneratePress and Gutenberg, and publish my own open source plugins, Updatronix for updates and ZenPress for making the site lighter. Projects now online are shown on the studio’s own site.

A quote, or a meeting

The first exchange is there to find out what the site should do: be found, reassure, or sell. It happens by phone or by video call, and commits you to nothing.

ask for a quote to describe your business in a few lines.

FAQ

No, and it is in fact the most common case at a port: the day starts before offices open. Exchanges happen by phone or by video call, early or late, and work on the site carries on while you are at sea. Decisions are taken in writing, with an answer when you are available.

I am based in the Pays Bigouden, in Loctudy, and I work with businesses from the area, from the port and the marine sector to shops. What the site has to do is easy to state: make the activity readable for someone who does not know the trade, publish accurate practical information, and make it possible to be reached without publishing a personal number. The rest is your trade, not the studio’s.

Not always. It becomes useful if part of the catch can be sold direct, if you offer boxes or gift vouchers, or if a service can be booked online. If your catch goes entirely to the fish market and you sell nothing direct, an online shop will bring you nothing. For fresh fish shipped out, the cold chain and the regulations stay on your side, and I say so when quoting rather than after.

That is precisely what the plan covers. Uptime is monitored continuously, backups run daily and are kept for 50 days, and a restore is set up without you having to intervene from a quay. Support comes to fifteen minutes a month, excluding site editing.

    Very helpful plugin

In the default view, the Update Log displays a very clear list of recent update activities. If desired, you can view a great deal of detail about each individual activity.

I also find the auto-updates view very well-designed. It’s much clearer than the standard plugin list, and you can configure updates quickly and easily.

I don’t use the Schedule feature at the moment, but I think it could be very useful for some admins.

I have all email notifications activated so I’m always up to date without having to visit each website explicitly.

Quentin, keep up the good work!

PS: A little feature request: when a plugin receives a major release, I’d like to skip the major release and automatically install the next minor release first. I don’t know if that’s possible, but it would be very helpful for some plugins.
