WordPress developer on Île-Tudy: a site for clients who are not there

Île-Tudy has around 750 residents at the last census, and a great many second homes. WordPress maintenance and hosting start at €39 excl. VAT per month, and a WooCommerce online shop at €69 excl. VAT per month. Île-Tudy had around 750 residents at the last census.

Île-Tudy has around 750 year-round residents, and roughly 70% of its homes are second homes, one of the highest rates in Finistère. That single figure explains the economy of the peninsula, and it also explains why a website plays a particular role here.

The clients are there without being there. Owners live elsewhere for much of the year, and visitors come for a few days and leave. For a shop, a host, a watersports business or a tradesperson who looks after houses, it means one simple thing: the relationship starts online, and often at a distance.

WordPress websites for shops and hosts on Île-Tudy

What I do for shops and hosts on Île-Tudy

The peninsula

On a peninsula, two constraints govern everything else: the season, and access.

The season first. Many businesses shorten their hours or close out of season, and a visitor arriving in June on a silent site cannot tell whether you are open. The site has to say it, month by month, without anyone rewriting it every year.

Then access. The peninsula is reached by a narrow strip of land, and parking is hard in summer. A useful site answers these questions before they are asked: where to park, how to come without a car, and at what hours the ferry crosses to Loctudy.

What I put in place:

  • opening periods stated plainly, changeable in minutes from a phone
  • a careful mobile display, because an address or an opening time gets looked up from the road
  • a form reachable at any hour, without publishing a personal number
  • a fast load, tested on an average mobile connection

I work for Combrit, Penmarc’h, Le Guilvinec and the rest of the Pays Bigouden, and WordPress developer in Loctudy as well as WordPress developer in Pont-l’Abbé describe the same services. The area I cover page lists the territory.

What happens when an existing site is taken over

Taking over

The peninsula’s sites often exist already, built a few years ago and left as they were. Taking one over starts with a full review, changing nothing at first.

For maintenance, that review happens on the live site: installed plugins, measured performance, verified security. The technical upgrade comes next. Vulnerabilities fixed, settings checked, what is useless removed. The data then migrates to a managed hosting plan, and the site starts again on a clean base.

And if the theme or the plugins are no longer maintained by their authors, rebuilding is sometimes cheaper than repairing. Both options are priced before the decision, never after.

The maintenance plan, in plain terms

The plan

The plan starts at €39 excl. VAT per month, for one site, with a minimum commitment of six months.

What it includes: eco-friendly hosting with Hosterra, 3 GB of storage and a domain name up to €15 per year; daily WordPress, theme and plugin updates, checked before they are applied; daily backups kept for up to 50 days; continuous monitoring of uptime and errors; a monthly maintenance report; fifteen minutes of support per month, excluding site editing.

Checking beats claiming. I write the tools I maintain sites with myself: Updatronix keeps the log of every update and can postpone one while feedback comes in, and ZenPress makes the site lighter. Both are published on the official WordPress repository.

What is not included is written down too. Site editing is billed at the hourly rate of €60 excl. VAT: fixing text, adding products, replacing photographs. New features are quoted separately. And when nobody maintains a plugin any more, I stop there.

The maintenance page details the offer, its options and its limits.

What an online shop changes

Selling online

On a peninsula whose clients mostly live elsewhere, an online shop does more than elsewhere: it takes payment when nobody is there to do it. A host taking a deposit, a shop selling an item after the visitor has gone, a watersports business taking bookings. The request is handled without you.

The shop offer starts at €69 excl. VAT per month, with a 24-month commitment, no setup fee and no commission on sales. Card payment is set up through Stripe on your own account, the full buying journey is built and tested, and legal compliance is included: legal notice, privacy policy, terms of sale, delivery and returns. These are generic templates, to be adapted to your business.

One reservation, as everywhere else: if your stays already book very well over the phone, a shop adds nothing. In a small commune, a just site beats an unused tool.

Working with a studio remotely

Working remotely

I am based in Loctudy, on the other side of the estuary, a few minutes from Île-Tudy. Nothing to visit, nothing to do on site: meetings happen by phone or by video call.

This page does not need to invent an argument on the point: it has been the studio’s way of working from the start. I work remotely, for clients I do not meet, and I am reachable when they are. On a peninsula where a large share of owners do not live there, that way of working is not a constraint to justify. It is what clients already expect.

The trade-off is stated without detour: nobody will come and fix a breakdown on site. Everything goes through remote access, backups and monitoring, which are part of the plan.

A quote, or a meeting

The first exchange is there to find out what the site should do, what already exists, and what you expect from it. By phone or by video call, and with no commitment on your side.

ask for a quote to describe your project in a few lines.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

Yes, in three ways. Opening periods have to be stated plainly, because a visitor out of season cannot guess. The site has to let people ask for a quote or a booking at any hour, without you being available to answer. And it has to inspire confidence in somebody who may never meet you in person.

Both matter more here than elsewhere. One badly stated opening month, or one missing piece of parking information, and the visitor calls somebody else. These details are changed in minutes from a phone.

No. I am in Loctudy: no office to visit, no travelling. Meetings happen by phone or by video call, and all the work is done remotely, backups, monitoring and restores included.

    Very helpful plugin

In the default view, the Update Log displays a very clear list of recent update activities. If desired, you can view a great deal of detail about each individual activity.

I also find the auto-updates view very well-designed. It’s much clearer than the standard plugin list, and you can configure updates quickly and easily.

I don’t use the Schedule feature at the moment, but I think it could be very useful for some admins.

I have all email notifications activated so I’m always up to date without having to visit each website explicitly.

Quentin, keep up the good work!

PS: A little feature request: when a plugin receives a major release, I’d like to skip the major release and automatically install the next minor release first. I don’t know if that’s possible, but it would be very helpful for some plugins.
