WordPress developer in Penmarc’h: a site that follows the season

Penmarc’h has around 5,500 residents and fourteen kilometres of coastline split across four districts. WordPress maintenance and hosting start at €39 excl. VAT per month, and a WooCommerce online shop at €69 excl. VAT per month. I work with the seasonal businesses of Penmarc’h, from restaurants and accommodation to shops, and I keep the site running through your season, remotely.

Penmarc’h had around 5,500 residents at the last census, in Finistère. That figure only tells you half the story, the half that is January. In August the population multiplies: queues grow, bookings pile up, and the site has to answer at the moment when nobody has time to repair it.

The commune has another oddity: it is not one village. The village, Kérity, Saint-Pierre and Saint-Guénolé each have their own port, their own square, their own season, and the Eckmühl lighthouse stands on the point at Saint-Pierre.

What the season changes for a Penmarc’h site

The season

A seasonal business site has two audiences, and they are not looking for the same thing at the same time.

In summer, the visitor arrives on a phone, often on the move, with a practical question: opening hours, the booking, the car park, the nearest beach. They do not read, they check. If the page takes four seconds to load while they are on 4G at the port of Saint-Guénolé, they have already moved on.

In winter, the same site receives a local audience, more patient, looking for information or getting ready for the next season. It is also the moment when the owner can work on the site calmly: adding pages, changing text, preparing the year’s menu.

A site that serves both comes down to one simple arrangement: it is fast, it is up to date, and somebody is watching it when nobody else is. Those three do not come together by accident.

Holding through the high season without thinking about it

The high season

The peak is not prepared in July. What happens beforehand is technical and quiet: caching the site and its assets, trimming image weight with no visible loss, switching off features that are of no use, and hosting whose figures you know rather than default hosting.

Then comes the rest, which is upkeep. WordPress, theme and plugin updates run daily, and are checked before they are applied, because a plugin update that breaks a booking form in the middle of the season is an incident you do not want a client to discover.

Backups close the line, kept for up to 50 days. That depth is not a decorative figure: on a seasonal site, a product listing changed by mistake or a form that stops sending is often noticed weeks later. A seven-day copy is worth nothing by then.

The outcome is simple: you open the season, the site is in a state to receive it, and you have had nothing to do.

The maintenance plan, in plain terms

The plan

The plan starts at €39 excl. VAT per month, for one site, with a minimum commitment of six months. It includes eco-friendly hosting with Hosterra, 3 GB of storage and a domain name up to €15 per year, plus daily updates that are checked, backups for 50 days, continuous monitoring, a monthly report and fifteen minutes of support.

What is not included is written down too. Site editing, whether fixing text, adding products or replacing photographs, is billed at the hourly rate of €60 excl. VAT. New features are quoted separately. And when a plugin is no longer maintained by its author, I do not take it on, which is a warning worth taking seriously on a site that has to hold through the season.

An update that breaks a site in August costs dear. The Updatronix plugin, which I develop and publish on the official WordPress repository, makes it possible to postpone a release, that is, to wait a few days for the first feedback without switching updates off. For a seasonal business, that delay is not a comfort: it is what keeps you from testing a release published the day before your biggest month.

The full detail, line by line, is on the maintenance and hosting page.

What an online shop changes

Selling online

A seasonal business often loses money outside the season. An online shop answers that precise case: it sells what is not consumed on site. A restaurant can offer gift vouchers, an artisanal cannery fine groceries, a campsite vouchers to give away, a rental business bookings taken at a distance.

The shop offer starts at €69 excl. VAT per month, with a 24-month commitment, no setup fee and no commission on sales. Card payment is set up through Stripe on your own account, and legal compliance is included: legal notice, privacy policy, terms of sale, delivery and returns. These are generic templates, to be adapted to your business.

One obligation is worth knowing if you sell to private individuals. Since 28 June 2025, online commerce services aimed at consumers must be accessible to people with disabilities, for companies with more than ten employees and more than two million euros in turnover. Below those thresholds it does not apply; the criteria remain useful, if only for a client reading the page from the beach.

Working with a studio remotely

Working remotely

I am in Loctudy, a few kilometres from Penmarc’h, Le Guilvinec and Pont-l’Abbé. The studio does not travel and does not receive visitors: meetings happen by video call or by phone, and the work is done remotely.

For a seasonal business, that arrangement has a concrete advantage. A project can be prepared in February and followed in August without travelling at either end, which matters when the working day leaves no room for a meeting.

The trade-off exists and is stated: nobody will come on site to solve a problem. Everything goes through remote access, backups and monitoring, which are precisely what the plan puts in place. Loctudy and Pont-l’Abbé describe the same arrangement in their own context.

A measured quality approach, not an installed theme

Quality

A site that has to hold through a season cannot be delivered at random. The studio’s services rest on two measurable references: the certification Opquast niveau expert, with a score of 958 out of 1000 obtained in 2024, covering site quality and accessibility, and the ISTQB software tester certification obtained in 2022.

So the site is tested before it goes live: the forms, the mobile display, which carries most seasonal traffic, the loading speed, link consistency and readability. I work with WordPress, WooCommerce, GeneratePress and Gutenberg, and publish my own open source plugins: Updatronix for updates, ZenPress for making the site lighter. Projects now online are shown on the studio’s own site.

A quote, or a meeting

The first exchange is there to find out whether the site would hold next season as it stands, or whether it is better to take it over now. It happens by phone or by video call, and commits you to nothing.

ask for a quote to describe your business in a few lines.

That is what the plan is for. The technical preparation happens before the season (caching, lighter images, measured hosting), then daily updates, backups and monitoring take over. There is nothing for you to launch or to watch.

Yes, and it is often useful here. The village, Kérity, Saint-Pierre and Saint-Guénolé each have their own shops and their own points of interest, between Le Guilvinec and the Pointe du Raz. One page per district, or one well-structured page, is decided when the project starts, according to what your visitors actually look for.

That depends on what you sell. A brochure site is enough to be found and to give practical information. A shop becomes useful when part of the activity can be sold out of season or at a distance: gift vouchers, takeaway products, bookings.

It keeps running and being maintained, and that is the most useful period to develop it. Updates, backups and monitoring do not stop between two seasons; that is in fact when problems get settled without pressure.

    Very helpful plugin

In the default view, the Update Log displays a very clear list of recent update activities. If desired, you can view a great deal of detail about each individual activity.

I also find the auto-updates view very well-designed. It’s much clearer than the standard plugin list, and you can configure updates quickly and easily.

I don’t use the Schedule feature at the moment, but I think it could be very useful for some admins.

I have all email notifications activated so I’m always up to date without having to visit each website explicitly.

Quentin, keep up the good work!

PS: A little feature request: when a plugin receives a major release, I’d like to skip the major release and automatically install the next minor release first. I don’t know if that’s possible, but it would be very helpful for some plugins.
