WordPress developer in Saint-Jean-Trolimon: a thousand residents, and a site that counts

Saint-Jean-Trolimon has around 1,000 residents, the smallest commune in the Pays Bigouden. WordPress maintenance and hosting start at €39 excl. VAT per month, and a WooCommerce online shop at €69 excl. VAT per month. Saint-Jean-Trolimon had around 1,000 residents at the last census, in Finistère.

Saint-Jean-Trolimon is the smallest commune in the Pays Bigouden, with around 1,000 residents at the last census. That figure says something useful about a website project, and it is better to say it plainly. Businesses are few here, and a site does not play the same role as elsewhere.

In a commune this size, everybody knows everybody. The site is not there first to be found by your neighbours. It answers the people who are not from around here: the visitor looking for accommodation, an activity or a local product, and who knows nobody.

What I do for tradespeople and hosts in Saint-Jean-Trolimon

The commune

In a commune of fewer than a thousand residents, a professional site fills two precise roles.

The first is to make a business findable from outside. Accommodation, a table, an outdoor activity: the demand comes from people who know neither the commune nor its residents, and who search online before they pick up the phone.

The second is to say exactly what exists, with no embellishment. One clear page about what you offer, your hours, your contact details and your prices beats a ten-page site that leaves you guessing. Here is what I put in place:

  • a presentation of the business, its products and its services, readable on a phone
  • hours and contact details that are exact, changeable in minutes without a provider
  • a contact form reachable at any hour, without publishing a personal number
  • a fast load, tested on an average mobile connection

Neighbouring communes have their own page, WordPress developer in Loctudy and WordPress developer in Pont-l’Abbé, and the area I cover page lists the whole Pays Bigouden.

What happens when an existing site is taken over

Taking over

The commune’s sites often already exist, built a few years ago, sometimes by a relative. Taking one over starts with a full review, before a single line is changed, and with no judgement on what was done.

For maintenance, that review happens on the live site: installed plugins, measured performance, verified security. A technical upgrade follows, with vulnerabilities fixed, what is no longer used cleared out, and the settings checked one by one, then the data migrates to a managed hosting plan.

If the conclusion is different, it is said just as clearly. When the theme is too damaged, or the plugins are no longer maintained by their authors, starting from a clean base costs less than repairing. Both options are priced before the decision.

The maintenance plan, in plain terms

The plan

The plan starts at €39 excl. VAT per month, for one site, with a minimum commitment of six months.

What it includes: eco-friendly hosting with Hosterra, 3 GB of storage and a domain name up to €15 per year; daily WordPress, theme and plugin updates, checked before they are applied; daily backups kept for up to 50 days; continuous monitoring of uptime and errors; a monthly maintenance report; fifteen minutes of support per month, excluding site editing.

One claim here can be checked rather than proclaimed. I write the tools I maintain sites with myself. Updatronix keeps the log of every update, and can postpone one while feedback comes in. ZenPress makes the site lighter and closes the features it does not use. Both are published on the official WordPress repository.

What is not included is written down too. Site editing is billed at the hourly rate of €60 excl. VAT: fixing text, adding products, replacing photographs. New features are quoted separately. And when nobody maintains a plugin any more, I stop there.

The maintenance page details the offer, its options and what it leaves out.

What an online shop changes

Selling online

In a commune this size, an online shop answers one case, and it is real: selling to the people who have gone home. A host collecting a deposit, a producer shipping their goods, an outdoor activity taking bookings online, so sales no longer depend on physical presence.

The shop offer starts at €69 excl. VAT per month, with a 24-month commitment, no setup fee and no commission on sales. Card payment is set up through Stripe on your own account, the full buying journey is built and tested, and legal compliance is included: legal notice, privacy policy, terms of sale, delivery and returns. These are generic templates, to be adapted to your business.

And if that case never arises, the answer is the same as elsewhere: a brochure site kept up to date is enough, and costs less. In a commune of a thousand residents, a just site beats an unused shop.

Working with a studio remotely

Working remotely

I am based in Loctudy, a few minutes from Saint-Jean-Trolimon. Nothing to visit, nothing to do on site: meetings happen by phone or by video call, and the work is done remotely. I work across the whole Pays Bigouden, from Loctudy to Penmarc’h and Le Guilvinec, through Pont-l’Abbé and Plonéour-Lanvern.

What does not change is the person you talk to. I work alone, so you will not be handed to somebody else on each call. The trade-off is stated too: nobody will come and fix a breakdown on site, or rescue a computer in an emergency, and everything goes through remote access, backups and monitoring, which are part of the plan.

A quote, or a meeting

The first exchange is there to find out what your site needs, and what already exists. It commits you to nothing.

ask for a quote to describe your project in a few lines.

For a business that receives people from elsewhere, yes, and more than elsewhere: your neighbours already know you, and the others are the ones to convince. For a business that only works locally and by word of mouth, a short site kept up to date is enough.

That is decided after the review of the site, not before. If the theme and the plugins hold up, an upgrade is enough. If they are no longer maintained, rebuilding costs less, and both options are priced before the decision.

No. I am in Loctudy: no office to visit, no travelling. Meetings happen by phone or by video call, and all the work is done remotely, backups and monitoring included.

    Very helpful plugin

In the default view, the Update Log displays a very clear list of recent update activities. If desired, you can view a great deal of detail about each individual activity.

I also find the auto-updates view very well-designed. It’s much clearer than the standard plugin list, and you can configure updates quickly and easily.

I don’t use the Schedule feature at the moment, but I think it could be very useful for some admins.

I have all email notifications activated so I’m always up to date without having to visit each website explicitly.

Quentin, keep up the good work!

PS: A little feature request: when a plugin receives a major release, I’d like to skip the major release and automatically install the next minor release first. I don’t know if that’s possible, but it would be very helpful for some plugins.
